Experiments
Investigations into stresses and strains in a thin cylinder, to give students an understanding of:
Longitudinal stress, hoop (or circumferential) stress, radial stress and biaxial stress
The behaviour of the cylinder under both open and closed-end conditions
The use of strain gauges
The stress strain relationship and value of Young’s modulus for the cylinder material
Indirect strain and stress
The value of Poisson’s ratio for the cylinder material
The use of Mohr’s circle to calculate the shear strain at any position in the cylinder
The use of the ‘superposition method’ to find the principal strains
The effect of the biaxial stress system
Sources of error in their experiments

Specifications
To include a thin-walled aged aluminium alloy 6063 thin cylinder and hydraulic hand pump with electronic pressure transducer, mounted on precision engineered steel base unit
To include a clamp at each end of the cylinder and a hand wheel, allowing open and closed ends experiments
To include a bourdon-type safety pressure gauge with 5 MN.m-2 range
Includes pressure transducer to connect to Versatile Data Acquisition System
Maximum cylinder pressure: 3.5 MN.m-2, to be set by pressure relief valve on the hand pump
Cylinder to contain approx 2 litres of working oil. Recommended oils to be;
Shell Tellus S2M32
BP Energol HLP32
Castrol Hyspin AWS32
Mobil DTE Light
Cylinder dimensions: 80 mm internal diameter, 3 mm nominal wall thickness, 359 mm length. Actual wall thickness to be marked on front of unit
Young’s modulus of cylinder: 69 GN.m-2
Poisson’s ratio of cylinder: 0.33
Six electrical resistance self-temperature compensation type strain gauges to be mounted on the cylinder at 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90º
A digital display is mounted on the front panel to show strain in µε without the need for a computer
Nett Dimensions and weight: 715 mm long x 370 mm high x 380 mm front to back, 30 kg
